Preparing your skin—canvas for your big day!

Have you ever experienced cakeynes, dry patches or breakouts that ruin your makeup? A lot of women do and little do they know that it is something that is easily prevented. What is the secret? Skin care! The success and secret to a flawless makeup look is having a good canvas—skin to work with. Even though you spend hundreds of dollars hiring a makeup artist to make you feel and look beautiful it is your responsibility to provide a good canvas. Here are a few tips and tricks to make your skin the best canvas possible.

The first thing you should know and understand is that skin care works over time, this means that you must be consistent to see results. If you invest in a skin care routine make sure you follow it every morning and night to see results. Usually it can take between 6 to 8 weeks to notice the full effects of your new skin care routine, so don’t get disappointed if after a week or two you don’t see results. If you want to go the extra mile you can invest on going to a dermatologist or cosmetologist that can recommend products that target your skin type and that will address specific concerns. There is a lot of misinformation online and sometimes sales associates in stores are not fully qualified to recommend products.

The second thing that you should do before the big day is get a facial. It is extremely important to book the appointment at least two weeks before the big day in case your skin reacts to the treatment causing redness or temporary scars from extractions. Many times after a facial your skin may look worse for a few days before you can see the final result. Booking a facial is an investment because cosmetologists are experts in removing any black heads or zits that you may have without ruining your skin by leaving scars.

Third thing is to exfoliate, it is important to do it once or twice a week because it removes dead skin and prevents makeup from looking cakey. A lot of makeup artists ask their clients if they exfoliate or not because using different tools like brushes can cause micro exfoliation ruining the foundation application. So just to be safe exfoliate in the weeks leading to your big day and use a light exfoliator the day before the big day to prepare your skin. It is also good to include exfoliating in your routine up to two times a weeks for benefits like anti aging, prevention of acne and evening skin tone.

Another tip to create the best canvas to work with is avoiding long sun exposure or getting sunburned the weeks leading to your big day. Getting sunburned can lead to peeling and dryness which will ruin your foundation application no matter which products are being used. Your skin will look uneven and dry right after applying foundation or really soon after your makeup is finished.

To finish, make sure that you know what is your skin type, are you oily? Are you dry? Combination? This is important so that your makeup artist knows which makeup products are best suited for you. From the correct moisturizer, primer, foundation to where to apply highlight. For example oily skin types don’t need a lot of highlight because we don’t want to help the skin look more shiny by the end of the day. And remember to always be honest with your artist so you can work together to make you the best version of yourself!
